Start — Dovedale car park
From the main car park near Thorpe, the flat riverside path reaches the stepping stones in 10 minutes. Cross early to beat the queues — this is one of the most photographed spots in the Peak District.
Through the gorge
Continue north past Lover's Leap (short climb, big view), the twin Tissington Spires, and Reynard's Cave with its natural stone arch. The gorge narrows at Dove Holes — two huge, shallow caves you can walk straight into.
Milldale & return
The path ends at the postcard hamlet of Milldale (snack hatch at Polly's Cottage). Return the same way — the gorge looks completely different southbound — or climb out via Hall Dale for a quieter high-level loop.
Local area
Combine with Thorpe Cloud (a 30-minute steep pull, huge payoff) or the Tissington Trail cycleway. Ashbourne, 15 minutes away, is the classic gateway town with cafés and gear shops.
