Mam Tor & The Great Ridge

Start — Mam Nick car park

Park at Mam Nick (National Trust, fills by 9am on weekends). A stone-flagged path climbs steadily to Mam Tor's summit in about 20 minutes. The trig point sits inside an Iron Age hill fort — on a clear morning you can see cloud inversions filling the Edale valley below.

The Great Ridge

From the summit, follow the paved ridge path east. It rolls over Hollins Cross (the old coffin road crossing) and Back Tor's short sharp scramble, then on to Lose Hill. This is the classic 'ridge walking for beginners' line — always obvious, never exposed, and photogenic the entire way.

Descent & return

Drop south from Lose Hill towards Hope, then either loop back along the valley floor through Castleton (add the show caves or a pub stop) or retrace the ridge for double the views. The Castleton loop passes directly under Mam Tor's collapsed east face — the abandoned, buckled old A625 road is worth the detour alone.

Local area

Castleton village sits at the foot of the ridge: four show caves (Blue John, Speedwell, Peak, Treak Cliff), good pubs, and Peveril Castle. Nearby Winnats Pass is one of the most dramatic road passes in England — walk it at dawn before traffic.
