Start, parking & getting there

Padstow is the classic start, with car parks near the old station by the harbour; there is also parking at Wadebridge, Bodmin (Dunmere and Scarletts Well), Grogley Halt, Shell Woods and Wenfordbridge. The nearest mainline station is Bodmin Parkway — you can ride to Bodmin town or, on some days, use the Bodmin & Wenford heritage railway (check its timetable and bike policy). Main-line operators may ask you to reserve a bike space, so book before you travel.

The ride

The trail splits into three sections: Padstow to Wadebridge (about 5.5 miles) hugs the Camel Estuary with big views over sandbanks and birdlife; Wadebridge to Bodmin (about 5.75 miles) follows the river through woodland; and Bodmin to Wenfordbridge (about 6.25 miles) is the quietest and most sheltered stretch. Many families ride Padstow to Wadebridge and back; the full out-and-back is a long but gentle day.

Supplies: food, water, bike shops & repairs

Padstow and Wadebridge have plenty of cafés, pubs, bakeries and shops, and Bodmin has supermarkets; the upper valley has fewer options, so carry water and snacks beyond Bodmin. Licensed cycle hire operates at Padstow, Wadebridge, Bodmin and Wenfordbridge, and hire shops can usually help with minor repairs. Hire bikes sell out in the school holidays, so booking ahead is wise.

Where to camp or stay

There are many campsites and holiday parks around Padstow and Wadebridge, and YHA Treyarnon Bay sits on the coast a few miles west of Padstow. Padstow and Wadebridge also have hotels, B&Bs and pubs with rooms, but summer demand is high — book early. Wild camping is not generally legal in England without the landowner's permission.

Bike, kit & safety

The surfaced trail suits any bike, including children's bikes, trailers and tag-alongs. It is a multi-use path shared with walkers, dogs, horse riders and wheelchair users, and the Padstow–Wadebridge section can be very busy in summer, so ride slowly and use a bell. Weather off the estuary changes quickly — carry a waterproof — and check the Cornwall Council Camel Trail page for any closures or diversions before setting out.
